Seems like a waste of time for the Italians . COMAC and UAC are having trouble building and selling a lot less complex planes .

Hey Comac, how’s that ARJ21 working out for you? But seriously, though, what hope does anybody have of creating a serious challenger to Boeing and Airbus? They’ve already gobbled up the only credible competition, and that was in a segment the CR929  doesn’t address.

I suspect they have a great chance at doing so. They will use their forced partnership with Airbus to get the manufacturing part down, and they will cut corners with both labor and regulation. Obviously that leaves a big and challenging piece in the actual design area, but there are enough Chinese working at western aerospace companies and attending western universities(to say nothing of the fact that they can just hire designers from Boeing and Airbus) that I don’t see a shortage of design talent continuing.

I actually think the fact they’ve built so few ARJ21s as encouraging for the sector, it shows that the focus right now is on trying to get good manufacturers into China to build knowledge, rather than trying to protect a poor product just because it is domestic.

Engineered  in Italy, built in China. They just need to serve British food and put the Greeks in charge of financing...

The Chinese said the country has millions of engineers, of course they still seem to need Leonardo’s expertise.

Having engineers doesn’t necessarily equal expertise. But China has the time and the money, and they are playing the long game, be it commercial aviation or hegemony over the South China Sea and beyond.
